IPL 2023: Top five potential replacements for CSK pacer Kyle Jamieson

With IPL 2023 fast approaching, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) face a setback as their key player Kyle Jamieson is struggling with an injury. The New Zealand seamer has an impressive track record of success in the international level.

With a remarkable record in Test cricket, the 28-year-old has taken 72 wickets in 16 matches at an impressive average of 19.45. His success in one-day internationals is equally noteworthy, having taken 11 wickets in just eight games at a respectable average of 4.31.

Chennai Super Kings acquired Kyle Jamieson for ₹1 crore during the IPL 2023 auction in a bid to bolster their bowling attack. Regrettably, the talented paceman’s persistent back injury casts doubt on his ability to participate in the upcoming season.

Since June of last year, Jamieson has been on the sidelines due to his back injury and was attempting to make a comeback during the ongoing two-match Test series against England. Unfortunately, his return to the field did not materialise.

He will be out of action for approximately four months, ruling him out of playing for CSK in the 16th edition of Indian Premier League.

Consequently, CSK will have to select a replacement for Jamieson for IPL 2023. The team based in Chennai may be contemplating a few high-profile players to take his place.

In the following list, we examine five players who could potentially replace the NZ bowler. All of them are highly accomplished and would be valuable additions to the CSK team.

Dasun Shanaka

The Sri Lankan batter Dasun Shanaka has demonstrated his reliability as a player in the T20 circuit, having played in 178 matches and scoring 3,674 runs with a strike rate of 142.45. Additionally, the 31-year-old has also achieved success on an international level, accumulating 1,328 runs with a strike rate of 121.83 in 85 T20 Internationals.

His participation in the IPL could serve as a platform to demonstrate his talent again.

Andrew Tye

Australia’s Andrew Tye has achieved significant success in T20 competitions, having played in 214 matches and securing 301 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 8.18. In addition, the 36-year-old is a capable lower-order batsman who has played crucial innings in important matches.

With his wealth of expertise, Tye would be a valuable addition to any team. Given his recent top-level performances, it’s possible that the CSK management may consider selecting the Australian pacer for the upcoming season of the lucrative tournament.

Gerald Coetzee

The 22-year-old Gerald Coetzee is a rising star in the realm of South African cricket, having demonstrated impressive performance. He has taken 20 wickets at an average of 5.20 in 12 List-A games and claimed 54 victims at an economy rate of 7.83 in 38 games in the shortest format.

With a tally of 17 wickets at an economy rate of 8.07 in nine matches of SA20, the right-arm bowler could be a valuable addition to the Chennai team’s lineup for IPL 2023.

Wayne Parnell

South Africa’s Wayne Parnell has established himself as a dependable player in the shortest version of the game, using his array of variations to stifle opposing batters and dismantle even the most skilled bowling attacks.

In addition, the 33-year-old is highly proficient with the bat and makes significant contributions to his team. He poses a threat in the power play due to his proficiency in swinging the new ball, and towards the end of the game, he can unleash devastating yorkers that leave the opposition hobbling.

As a left-arm fast bowler, Parnell provides the pace attack with a valuable element of diversity, and his batting skills are an added bonus. As a result, the Chennai team may be considering recruiting him for the 2023 IPL season.

Riley Meredith

Riley Meredith has been a consistent performer in T20 tournaments, having played in 77 matches and claimed 100 wickets at an economy rate of 8.33. Although he has only appeared in 13 games in the IPL, the 26-year-old Australian paceman has shown glimpses of his talent by taking 12 wickets at an economy rate of 9.00.

Bringing in Meredith would add another dimension to Chennai’s pace attack and complete their bowling unit. With the speedster currently in great form, CSK may consider acquiring him to take the place of Jamieson in the upcoming IPL 2023 season
