During his school cricket days, Prithvi Shaw was identified as a remarkable talent due to his exceptional potential and skills. He made an impressive start to his career and has gone on to represent Team India in 5 Tests, 6 ODIs, and 1 T20I.
In October 2018, he became a member of the exclusive club of Indian batsmen who scored a century on their Test debut. Nevertheless, he has struggled to secure a regular spot in the national team across all formats. Additionally, he has been embroiled in numerous controversies since 2019.
This article will cover the three major controversies that have marked the career of the 23-year-old’s cricketer.
#1 Controversy surrounding a selfie.
Prithvi Shaw had gone out for dinner at a five-star hotel in Santacruz when an unidentified person asked to take a selfie with him. As a gesture of goodwill, Shaw agreed to the request. However, the same group returned and demanded additional selfies, which Shaw refused as he was with his companions.

Following this, Shaw’s friend filed a complaint against the group with the hotel management. This action apparently angered the group, who were later asked to leave the hotel. When Shaw and his friend exited the hotel, they were met by a group of individuals holding baseball bats. The group proceeded to use the bats to smash the front and rear windows of Shaw’s friend’s BMW.
Sapna Gill, one of the individuals accused of vandalizing the car, was arrested by the Mumbai Police. However, she accused Shaw and his friends of physically assaulting her and claimed that Shaw had a stick in his hand during the altercation.
#2 Controversy surrounding a cough syrup.
During the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match on February 22, 2019, in Indore, Shaw’s urine sample was collected as part of the BCCI’s anti-doping testing protocol. Upon examination, the sample was found to contain Terbutaline, which is listed as a banned substance both in and out of competition by WADA.

As a result of the doping violation during the 2018-19 season, the cricketer was suspended until November 15, 2019. The player claimed to have inadvertently consumed the prohibited substance due to its presence in cough syrups, which caused him to miss the initial part of the Indian cricket season. The BCCI proposed an eight-month suspension, which was backdated in light of the test results.
#3 Not passing the Yo-Yo Test, a physical fitness assessment
According to PTI, prior to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, Prithvi Shaw failed the mandatory Yo-Yo test at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. The Yo-Yo test is a compulsory physical fitness assessment for all centrally contracted players before the IPL, regardless of whether they are injured or not.

Shaw, who was retained by the Delhi Capitals team before the IPL 2022 auction, visited the NCA to provide an update on his health status despite not being a centrally contracted player. The BCCI has set the cutoff score for males in the Yo-Yo test at 16.5. However, Shaw’s PTI score was below 15.
